Announcing the 118th Anniversary Commemoration of the Deeds of Independence Leaders Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un

The Korean Association of San Francisco & Bay Area (President Kim Han-il) will hold a commemoration ceremony on March 21st at the Korean Community Center to commemorate the 118th anniversary of the Deeds of Independence Leaders Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un, the first patriotic struggles that took place in San Francisco during the Japanese colonial era, when Korea was being eroded by imperialism. To honor and uphold the spirit of these two patriots, the ceremony will be held.

The March 23, 1908, deeds of Independence Leaders Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un in San Francisco are a pivotal historical event in the history of the Korean independence movement in the Americas. By executing Durham White Stevens, a pro-Japanese diplomat who forcibly stripped the Korean Empire of its diplomatic rights and paved the way for the annexation of Korea by Japan, the two patriots signaled to the world the nation's will to resist Japanese imperialism, which had violated Korea's sovereignty.

This act of independence was more than just a simple incident; it was a symbolic event in the Korean-American community's struggle for independence. Koreans in San Francisco and across the Americas, honoring the noble sacrifice and patriotism of these two doctors, continued their independence movement, which became a significant trend in the history of the Korean independence movement.

Today, the spirit of these two doctors, Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un, is not simply a historical event, but a precious historical legacy that awakens a sense of identity and community for Koreans living abroad. To reflect on this historical significance and carry on the patriotic spirit of these two doctors, local Koreans will gather together to commemorate their actions. We especially hope for the interest and participation of future generations of students, so that they can learn about the historical significance and cultivate their Korean identity.

San Francisco & Bay Area 한인회(회장 김한일)가 일본 제국주의가 대한민국의 주권을 침탈하던 시기 샌프란시스코에서 일어났던 최초의 의열투쟁인 장인환·전명운 의사 의거 118주년을 맞아 두 의사분들의 정신을 기리고 이어받기 위한 기념식을 오는 3월 21일 한인회관에서 개최합니다.

1908년 3월 23일 샌프란시스코에서 일어난 장인환 의사와 전명운 의사의 의거는 미주 한인 독립운동사에서 매우 중요한 역사적 사건입니다. 두 의사는 대한제국의 외교권을 강제로 박탈하고 한일병합의 길을 열었던 친일 외교관 더럼 화이트 스티븐스를 처단함으로써, 조국의 주권을 침탈한 일본 제국주의에 맞선 민족적 저항 의지를 전 세계에 알렸습니다.

이 의거는 단순한 사건을 넘어 미주 한인 사회가 조국의 독립을 위해 행동으로 나섰던 대표적인 항일 투쟁의 상징적인 사건입니다. 당시 샌프란시스코를 비롯한 미주 각지의 한인들은 두 의사의 숭고한 희생과 애국정신을 기리며 독립운동을 이어갔으며, 이는 대한민국 독립운동사의 중요한 흐름으로 이어졌습니다.
