Insun Park & The Generals
Insun Park & Generals deliver a groundbreaking fusion of rock, Korean traditional music and mask dance rhythms. A master of the Gangnyeong Mask Dance, designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 34, Park is one of the few female masters of a tradition historically dominated by men.
Renowned for her innovative spirit, Park reimagines age-old songs and performance styles to connect with modern audiences. Bill Bragin, Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi, described their performance as one that “transfixed the audience and won new fans from the very first note.” Earmilk called the experience “alive and immersive, inviting the audience into something that was both culturally significant and deeply celebratory.”
Park leads the quartet alongside composer and guitarist Donghyuk Heo, drummer Hyunmo Yang, bassist Hahyungki Baek and Johyun Kim on taepyeongso and flute. Together they push creative boundaries, merging ancestral art with contemporary sound and making Korea’s rich performance heritage feel urgent and new.
