Mental Health | Bridging the Gap to Wellness

The mental health landscape for Korean Americans in the Bay Area is shaped by a unique collision of factors. From the high-pressure environment of the Silicon Valley economy to a pervasive culture of silence surrounding emotional distress, our community faces significant systemic barriers to accessing culturally competent care.

Data highlights a critical mismatch: while Korean American immigrants experience high rates of mental health-related symptoms, they have the lowest levels of service utilization compared to other ethnic groups.

The Reality | By the Numbers

  • The Treatment Gap: 23% of Korean Americans report depressive symptoms, yet only 8.5% utilize mental health services.

  • Elevated Risk: Korean Americans experience twice the rate of higher depression scores compared to the general U.S. population.

  • The Insurance Barrier: Lack of health insurance makes a Korean American 4 times more likely to suffer from undiagnosed or untreated depressive symptoms.

Our Partners In Action

Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI)

For over a decade, KACF-SF has been the foundational partner in AACI’s mission to provide culturally specific mental healthcare. What began as a local outreach effort has grown into a comprehensive frontline safety net that treats the "whole person." By funding clinical counseling alongside the healing arts, we have empowered thousands of Korean Americans to move from the shadows of isolation into a community of resilience and hope.

Maru Center (formerly known as KCCEB)

KACF-SF has been the foundational partner in transforming the Maru Center into a regional leader for Korean American advocacy. What began as a local information line for Bay Area Koreans has evolved into a sophisticated, multi-lingual safety net that bridges the gap between our community and essential government resources. By investing in Maru Center’s vision, we have moved from simply providing "help" to creating "systemic change," ensuring that every Korean senior and family can navigate life in the Bay Area with dignity, health, and security.

National Alliance on Mental Illness - Santa Clara (NAMI-SCC)

KACF-SF has been the primary catalyst in helping NAMI SCC reach the Korean American community. Mental illness often carries a heavy burden of stigma in our culture, leading families to suffer in isolation. By investing in NAMI’s peer-led education and support groups, we have provided thousands of families with a no-cost roadmap to recovery. Together, we are transforming the way our community talks about mental health, replacing fear with knowledge and isolation with a powerful network of support.
