Legal Aid and Immigration Rights | Building Collective Power
For many in the Korean American community, the dream of stability is stalled by a complex and intimidating legal system. Language barriers and a lack of affordable, culturally competent counsel leave families vulnerable to housing instability, legal disputes in family law, and the constant fear of immigration crises. Without a trusted advocate, the path to citizenship and basic legal protection remains out of reach for those who need it most. By providing expert representation and bilingual guidance, our partners ensure that the law acts as a shield for our families rather than a barrier to their success.

The Reality | By the Numbers
53% of Korean Americans are "Limited English Proficient," a rate significantly higher than the overall Asian American average. This makes navigating U.S. courtrooms and legal documents nearly impossible without a bilingual advocate.
18% of the Korean immigrant population in the U.S. is eligible for naturalization but has not yet applied.
While often perceived as high earners, 1 in 10 Korean Americans lives in poverty. In high-cost areas like San Francisco, a single legal crisis, such as a wrongful eviction, can lead directly to homelessness.
Our Partners In Action
Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO)
APILO provides holistic legal and social services through offices in Oakland and San Francisco. With KACF SF support, their Civic Engagement and Empowerment Program helps families navigate complex legal cases including immigration, housing, family law, and elder abuse. By offering culturally and linguistically appropriate advocacy, they empower individuals to access their legal rights and build long-term stability.
Maru Center (formerly known as KCCEB)
KACF-SF has been the foundational partner in transforming the Maru Center into a regional leader for Korean American advocacy. What began as a local information line for Bay Area Koreans has evolved into a sophisticated, multi-lingual safety net that bridges the gap between our community and essential government resources. By investing in Maru Center’s vision, we have moved from simply providing "help" to creating "systemic change," ensuring that every Korean senior and family can navigate life in the Bay Area with dignity, health, and security.
Human Rights First
Human Rights First uses technology to protect our community during times of crisis. KACF-SF supports their innovative mobile tools that connect Korean community members to immediate legal aid during immigration emergencies. By bridging the gap between high-stakes legal needs and accessible technology, they ensure that the law acts as a digital shield for our most vulnerable neighbors.
Open Door Legal
Open Door Legal believes that justice should be a right, not a privilege. By providing free and low-cost services in housing, employment, and immigration law, they work to break the cycle of poverty. KACF-SF support has been key to expanding their reach within the Korean community, providing the expert interpreters and tailored advocacy needed to eliminate barriers to legal protection.
