SŌHN x Lizzie Oh: Coffee Clay: Exploring Biomaterials Through Material Experimentation

  • SOHN SF 2535 3rd Street San Francisco, California, 94107 United States (map)

What if spent coffee grounds could become a sculpting material?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the creative potential using SŌHN's spent coffee grounds as a versatile biomaterial. Through a series of material studies, they’ll discover how combining spent coffee grounds with different natural binders transforms their texture, flexibility, strength, and workability, revealing how small changes in composition can create materials with entirely different characteristics.

After exploring a curated library of coffee-based biomaterials, participants will learn techniques for shaping, joining, and finishing coffee clay before creating their own sculptural photo frame to take home.

Beyond a single recipe, this workshop explores multiple approaches to creating biomaterials for sculptural applications. Using coffee as a starting point, participants will gain a practical understanding of how different formulations influence material behavior and how those properties can be applied to future creative projects with a wide range of natural materials.
