Contemporary Korean painter Hiejin Yoo, whose vibrant, intimate works explore themes of identity, memory, and daily life, will hold a conversation about art and experience Korean artists in America with Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, Robert M. and Ruth L. Halperin Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Co-Director, Asian American Art Initiative at the Cantor Museum.
This event is held in collaboration with the Korean Consulate General in San Francisco. This event is free and open to the public.
About the speaker:
Hiejin Yoo (Born in Münster, Germany, 1987) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Yoo’s work has been exhibited at Gana Art Nineone, Seoul; K11 Art Foundation, Shanhai; Half Gallery, New York; Almine Rech Gallery, Brussels; Spurs Gallery, Beijing; Kunstraum Potsdam, Berlin; and Blum and Poe, Los Angeles; Plan X Gallery, Capri. Her work is included in public and private collections including High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Pérez Collection, Miami, FL; Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), Miami, FL; The FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; Marquez Art Projects, Miami, FL; and Xiao Museum, Rizhao, China. Yoo hold a Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
About the moderator:
Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander oversees the collection of modern and contemporary art at the Cantor Arts Center. At the Cantor, she is the curator of Spirit House (2024), Livien Yin: Thirsty (2024), East of the Pacific: Making Histories of Asian American Art (2022), and The Faces of Ruth Asawa (2022). Her accompanying catalogue to Spirit House is the museum’s first major publication of the AAAI. Alexander leads the AAAI’s curatorial program and collection building, working with artists, artist estates, galleries, and collectors.
