Our Story

The Korean American Community Foundation of San Francisco (KACF-SF) was founded in January 2014 by thirteen like-minded individuals (see list of Founding Members below) in an effort to address the needs of the Korean American community in the greater Bay Area. This group recognized the potential for philanthropic giving among Korean Americans in this region, and sought to tap the significant resources to help meet the community's most pressing needs. These individuals volunteered time and provided critical financial support in founding KACF-SF and continue to serve as our core volunteers.

KACF-SF, as the inaugural affiliate of the highly successful Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) in New York, leverages KACF's knowledge base and best practices as we partner with and provide grants and capacity-building assistance to service organizations in the greater Bay Area. Read an interview in the KACF June 2014 eNewsletter with KACF-SF founder and Board member Sophia Oh-Kim.

KACF-SF formally launched as a grant making organization in October 2014, under the fiscal sponsorship of KACF.  We achieved independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in April 2015. We are the only such foundation established for and by Korean Americans outside of New York.
